ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
Whilst committed to providing quality accommodation service, we remain mindful of our potential impact on the natural environment in which we operate:
Low Food Miles
Our region of North Yorkshire abounds with the widest range of fresh produce and we have selected the best local choices for your breakfast:
- Meats from Cedar Barn, our local farm shop, with the famous Yorkshire pork bacon and their homemade sausages.
- Free range eggs from our own hens.
- Granola and Muesli with porridge oat, freshly baked and rolled in the Yorkshire Dales
- Janet’s jams and marmalade, made at Strawberry Fields, Sinnington, with her home-grown plums and summer fruit.
No Palm oil
In support of rainforest protection against palm plantations, we are now only providing our guests with palm oil free products.
Minimal single-use plastics
Single-use plastics are slowly being eradicated from our B&B:
- Paper bin bags
- Compressed sugarcane toiletry bottles (Annwynn botanicals)
- Glass milk bottles
- Shopping using bags for life and food containers for loose items
Recycling
We make a point of recycling all packaging plastics, papers, cans and glass that are left by our guests.
Our hens are also happy to help ‘recycling’ any uneaten toast after breakfast!
But we can all easily limit the amount of waste thanks to the vast array of great quality unpackaged and local produce.
War on Waste
Reducing plastic bottle waste:
- North Yorkshire water is fresh and clean. So why not just refill your plastic bottle with our tap water. This is the cheapest, most refreshing drink for your day out.
Portion sizes:
- Yorkshire meal portions are famously generous which is great for large appetites. However, “light-bite” options are usually available. This avoids unfinished food going in the bin… and leaves you with a little room for pudding!
- The Breakfast pre-order forms allow us to provide our guests with exactly what is required, without further waste.
Energy saving:
- Our low energy bulbs and carefully timed heating contribute to reducing our carbon footprint. Do help us by turning lights off when not in the room and keeping the windows shut if your bedroom radiator is on.
- To further preserve energy, we only replace towels as required during our guests’ stay.
Leave the car behind
- Wrelton is served by a regular bus service (128) on the route between Helmsley and Scarborough.
This gives you access to the North York Moors Railway from Pickering to Whitby or other bus routes to Malton and York. - In the Summer, you can also jump on the Moors Bus straight outside our front door. This will take you through the North York Moors National Park, to Danby via Rosedale and other local villages.
This is still work in progress and any suggestions from our guests to further reduce our carbon footprint will be most welcome.
